Tips on Online Shopping for domain names

What are domain names?

Domain names are what we know websites by. For example, Walmart has a domain name called walmart.com. When you type a domain name in your browser, it takes you to Walmart website where you can browse, compare, and shop. You would want to buy a domain name for a year or more if you want to host your own website with its own special name, or if you just want to keep it so that you can sell it to someone later at a higher price. There are some components of the domain name you should know about before you start online shopping for domain names.
1. The name. This is the "walmart" part in walmart.com
2. The extension. This is the "com" part in walmart.com. The common extensions are net, org, com, biz, info, and us

Which domain name should I choose?
This depends on how you want to use the domain name, and also the budget. As a general rule, domain names should be easy to remember and easy to convey in a conversation or on the phone.
For example, a name like myjournal.com is easy to remember and convey on the phone, but a name like myno1journal.com is not that way. Try to avoid domain names that substitute numbers for letters. In terms of cost, the name of the domain depends on the extension. Generally, .info domains are cheaper than .com domains, but .com domains are easier to remember.

Where do I buy domain names?
Domains can be bought on domain registrar and reseller websites. Search for multiple websites that sell domains, compare prices, and services they offer. Talk to friends and acquaintances who may have already bought domain names.

Try to buy domains from bigger companies, they would be able to offer discounts and they may have deals when domains are on sale. Besides, while online shopping for domain names, you should try to buy them from a seller who lives near your locality, so that if you need to follow up for a service, it doesn't cost you the earth.

I have bought a domain name. What's next?
Good! Now you can buy a web hosting service provider to host your site on this domain, or you could ask your domain registrar to redirect the website to an already existing website of yours. Many registrars provide this service for a fee, or sometimes for free.
